Packers and Movers Charges from Mumbai to Kolkata

Pricing a five-state, week-long move

Quick answer

Mumbai to Kolkata moves usually cost ₹27,000–₹36,000 for a 1 BHK and up to ₹57,000–₹88,000 for a 3 BHK at market rates, with a 2 BHK typically around ₹42,000–₹57,000. These figures come from published price guides, not Skynet's rate card, and exclude GST and vehicle transport. Distance dominates this bill, so the type of truck is where most of the difference lies.

The table below shows market estimates for this route, taken from published price guides rather than from our own rate card. None of the figures include 18% GST, insurance, or a car or bike. Because the truck spends most of a week on the road, freight is the heaviest part of every range here, far more than packing or labour. So when two quotes for the same flat look far apart, first check whether one is for a shared load and the other for a dedicated truck. Only then compare the packing and access charges.

What moves the price on this route

A truck tied up for a week

A dedicated truck to Kolkata is committed for most of a week to get there, and it still has to find a load for the return. Movers price that time in, which is why sending a truck to Kolkata costs so much more than sending one to Pune, even though the packing and loading in Mumbai are exactly the same job.

Shared truck or a whole one

On a route this long, the gap between the two is wide. A 1 BHK on a shared truck splits the freight with other customers, while the same load on a dedicated truck pays for all of it. For a 3 BHK that fills most of a truck anyway, the difference narrows, and the speed and security of a dedicated vehicle usually win.

Floors and stairs at both ends

Plenty of older Kolkata homes, and a fair share of Mumbai's, have no lift. Carrying a fridge, a wardrobe and forty cartons up three floors takes more people and more hours, and that goes into the labour line. Tell the surveyor about the Kolkata building too, even before you've moved in, so the crew size is right on both days.

Cyclone and monsoon months

From June to September, and again when cyclones threaten the eastern coast in October and November, goods need heavier waterproof wrapping and a delay is a real possibility. The extra material costs little, but a truck held back for two days costs someone money, and some quotes build that in. Moving between November and February avoids most of it.

Puja and transfer season

Trucks and crews get busier in the run-up to Durga Puja and Diwali, and the April to June transfer season adds to the rush on long routes out of Mumbai. Quotes in these weeks are firmer and good dates go quickly, so booking three or four weeks ahead helps you get a truck at a normal rate.

How to pay less without cutting corners

On a route this long, the biggest savings come from the truck and the volume.

  • Consider a shared truck if you have a small load and can wait a few extra days.
  • Sell heavy, low-value furniture in Mumbai, because paying to haul it 1,890 km rarely makes sense.
  • Move between November and February, outside Puja weeks and cyclone warnings.
  • Book three or four weeks ahead, since long-haul trucks are harder to find at short notice.
  • Have the Kolkata flat ready on arrival, so there are no waiting or storage charges.

Mumbai to Kolkata charges: frequently asked questions

Straight answers to the questions customers ask us most.

Why does Mumbai to Kolkata cost so much more than a move to Pune?

Mainly distance. The packing and loading in Mumbai are much the same job, but a Kolkata truck spends most of a week on the road across five states, with diesel, tolls and the driver's days adding up. Longer routes also carry more risk of weather delays, and some movers build that into the price.

Do I pay extra for a third-floor walk-up in Kolkata?

Often, yes. Carrying everything up the stairs by hand takes more people and time, and most movers price that into labour. How much depends on the floor, the staircase and the size of your furniture, which is why the surveyor asks about the Kolkata building as well. Mention it early so it's in the written quote, not added on the day.

What happens to the price if a cyclone holds up the truck?

Ask your mover before booking how weather delays are handled, and get the answer in writing. Long holds are rare. The bigger cost risk is usually at your end, if the Kolkata flat isn't ready and goods need storage or the truck has to wait. Keeping a day or two of slack in your own plans avoids both.

Is it cheaper to drive my car to Kolkata or send it on a carrier?

Work out the full cost of driving before you decide. Add fuel, tolls, several hotel nights and meals for the days on the road, then compare that with a carrier, which typically costs ₹17,500–₹27,000. The carrier also saves your car about 1,890 km of wear, and it leaves you free to fly and start settling in.

How far ahead should I book a Mumbai to Kolkata move?

Three to four weeks is comfortable, and longer around Durga Puja, Diwali or the April to June transfer season. Long-haul trucks on this route are harder to find at short notice than trucks to Pune or Gujarat, and a rushed booking often means paying more or taking whatever date is free.
