Home and office shifting in Thiruvananthapuram through both monsoons

Sloping lanes and full-size trucks don't mix

Trivandrum is spread over low hills, and many of the nicer residential pockets, like Kowdiar, Sasthamangalam, Peroorkada and Vattiyoorkavu, sit on narrow, sloping roads. A full truck often can't turn in, let alone park. For those houses we run a smaller vehicle between the gate and the main truck waiting on a wider road. It adds an hour or two, and it beats dragging a loaded sofa down a slope.

Apartment complexes in Pattom, Kesavadasapuram and Kazhakootam usually need a lift booking and a fixed time window. Around East Fort, Chalai and Thampanoor there's simply no parking during the day, so loading starts early. Moves out to Neyyattinkara, Nedumangad or Attingal can have equally tight roads, so we look at both ends during the survey. Older houses often have steps up from the gate and a narrow front door, so big sofas and cots may need their legs taken off.

Technopark joiners and government transfers

Technopark in Kazhakootam draws people from all over India, and as the state capital the city has a constant flow of government transfers. Many of these moves are to or from Bangalore, Chennai or Hyderabad, and most come with a fixed joining date and very little leave. We can pack on a weekday evening or over the weekend, and a single move manager is your contact throughout, so you're not chasing different people for updates. Moving into government quarters? Collect the keys and check the water and power connections before booking the truck. Handovers can take longer than the order suggests, and it's easier to wait with your goods still packed at the old house.

How do you keep things dry through two monsoons?

Trivandrum gets the south-west monsoon from June to September and the north-east monsoon in October and November, and the air stays humid for most of the year. Cartons soak that up. Our 4-layer packing has a waterproof outer wrap, wooden furniture goes under Fabric Sheet, and books, documents and photographs are sealed in separate cartons with an extra layer. Everything travels in the closed Trucking Cube.

A practical tip: defrost the fridge and leave it and the washing machine open to dry fully a day before packing. Pack them damp and they'll smell of mould when you open them a week later in another city. Leather sofas and bags catch mould quickly too, so wipe them dry before they're wrapped.

Long routes out of Trivandrum

Kochi is about 210 km and takes 1–2 days; our Cochin page covers that end. Bangalore is about 670 km and takes 2–3 days, while Chennai, about 800 km, takes 3–5 days. After that the distances get serious. Hyderabad (about 1230 km) and Mumbai (about 1590 km) take 5–7 days, and Delhi, at about 2630 km, needs 8–12 days. Book the dispatch well before your joining date and carry enough to manage for a week or so.
