The trouble with moving furniture

Furniture is heavy and awkward, and a lot of it has polished or upholstered surfaces that mark easily. In a single move, a sofa goes through a doorway, down the stairs, onto the truck and off again. Each of those is a chance for damage. Upholstery picks up dust and stains, wood gets scratched, and glass or polished tops can chip at the edges.

Our answer is the Fabric Sheet, a specialised reusable sheet your furniture is packed in so it stays safe and secure for the whole move. It's one of our four in-house innovations, along with the Trucking Cube, the Perfect Box and the Bike Stand.

How does the Fabric Sheet protect furniture?

The sheet goes all the way around the piece, so edges, corners and finished surfaces are covered. That lowers the risk of scratches, scuffs and dents when furniture is carried or set down in the truck, and it keeps dust and dirt off upholstery and wood along the way.

The Fabric Sheet isn't used on its own. It works together with our 4-layer packing. Furniture is usually the bulkiest part of a household load, so protecting it well makes a big difference to how your home looks once everything's unpacked.

Why we went with reusable sheets

Traditional furniture packing uses a lot of single-use wrap that ends up in the bin after the move. A reusable sheet means less disposable material on every job. That saves on packing costs and improves the quality and safety of the move at the same time, which is why we made it a standard part of how we pack furniture.

You'll notice it when you unpack, too. There's far less wrapping to cut off and throw away, so the new place gets cleaned up faster. The Fabric Sheet came out of the same habit behind all our innovations. We look at what tends to go wrong during shifting and build a practical fix for it.

On a household shift or an office relocation, our field officer notes which furniture needs protecting during the free pre-move survey.

Before moving day, empty the drawers and wardrobes, take out glass shelves and loose fittings where you can, and point out antique or high-value pieces to the team. For anything that's tricky to put back together, take a couple of photos before it's dismantled and keep the screws in a labelled bag. If the furniture is going into storage first, the same careful wrapping helps it stay in good condition until it's delivered.
