Rain, and why October to December needs care

Most of Chennai's rain comes with the northeast monsoon between October and December, and when it comes, it comes hard. Streets in Velachery, Pallikaranai and Madipakkam can stay waterlogged for a day or two after a heavy spell. If your move falls in these months, keep the date a little flexible. We watch the forecast, don't load in a downpour, and wrap cartons, mattresses and sofas in waterproof sheets before they leave the door.

January to March is the easy window. By April the heat and humidity are back, and until the monsoon we start early so nobody is carrying a steel almirah down the stairs at 2 pm. Pongal week is worth avoiding as well, since a lot of people, drivers included, head home.

Along OMR, in Perungudi and Thoraipakkam and further down at Sholinganallur and Siruseri, most people live in big apartment complexes. You'll need a service-lift booking and a gate pass from the facility office, and many complexes fix the hours when moving is allowed. Service lifts in older towers can be small, so our surveyor measures the sofa, the cot and the wardrobe during the free pre-move survey rather than hoping they fit.

The older parts of the city are a different job. In Mylapore, T. Nagar and Triplicane the streets are narrow and parked two-wheelers take up half of them, so the truck may have to wait at the end of the road. Near the sea in Besant Nagar and Thiruvanmiyur, salty air gets into everything, and steel and electronics are packed dry and sealed.

What gets packed separately?

Our own trained crew does the packing, and a few things in a Chennai home always get their own attention. Brass kuthuvilakku lamps, pooja items and silk sarees are wrapped apart from everything else and labelled, so you can find them on the first day. Heavy steel almirahs are emptied, wrapped and carried upright. Glass, crockery and electronics get 4-layer packing, and furniture goes under our Fabric Sheet.

A day before the move, defrost the fridge and drain the washing machine, or water will drip onto cartons for the whole trip. Full household loads leaving the city can travel in our lockable Trucking Cube. How long do trucks from Chennai take?

Bengaluru is about 330 km, a 1–2 day move. Hyderabad (about 630 km) and Kochi (about 690 km) take 2–3 days. Visakhapatnam is about 810 km up the coast and takes 3–5 days. For Mumbai, about 1,230 km away, allow 5–7 days, and Delhi, at about 2,120 km, takes 6–9 days.
