Moving around Siliguri

Siliguri grew outwards from its old trading centre, and moving inside the city can feel like two different jobs. In Hakimpara, Ashrampara, Khalpara and the lanes around Bidhan Market, streets are narrow and busy from early morning, so we usually bring a smaller vehicle to the door. Out in Matigara, Champasari, Pradhan Nagar, Uttorayon or towards Bagdogra, the roads are wider and a truck can come right up to the building.

Hill Cart Road and Sevoke Road carry heavy traffic for most of the day, and that decides our loading time more than anything else. Newer apartment blocks may ask for a lift booking and fixed hours too. We sort out both on the survey.

Families living inside the cantonment areas around Sukna or Bengdubi usually need a gate pass for the truck. Arrange it a few days before, because a truck waiting at the gate is time lost for everyone.

How do hill moves to Darjeeling or Gangtok work?

Plenty of Siliguri moves go uphill, and things change once you leave the plains. The roads to Darjeeling, Kurseong, Mirik and Kalimpong are steep, with hairpin bends, and many homes up there can't be reached by a large truck, so we plan a smaller vehicle for the climb. Gangtok is about 110 km and a 1–2 day move, but the highway follows the Teesta, and between June and September landslides can close it for hours or days. We build extra time into monsoon moves and keep you updated on road reports.

Keep your ID handy, because vehicles get checked at the Sikkim border, and an itemised packing list stays with the driver. Coming down from the hills, goods travel in a small vehicle to Siliguri and are shifted into a bigger truck for the long haul. If you get to pick the season, November to February is the easiest.

Transfers through the gateway to the North East

Defence, central government, bank and tea-garden transfers pass through Siliguri all year, and many come at short notice. We plan around your joining date, and if your quarters aren't allotted yet, goods can go into storage until they are. Plenty of these families have been through a few postings already. If something went wrong on a past move, like a scratched dressing table or a carton that never turned up, tell us at the survey and we'll plan around it.

Packing for damp weather

Humidity in the Terai stays high for most of the year, and ordinary cardboard goes soft if you're not careful. Our 4-layer packing has a waterproof outer wrap, furniture is covered with Fabric Sheet, and glass and crockery go into Perfect Box cartons, which absorb the knocks on winding roads. Everything rides in the closed Trucking Cube, which you lock yourself. On your side, keep damp clothes, a wet mop or freshly washed curtains out of the cartons.

Cars go on a car carrier. Bikes get our Bike Stand, which holds both tyres, and on a hill road that matters more than anywhere. The packers and loaders are our own staff, and transit insurance is available if you want the extra cover.
