Ups, downs and narrow lanes in Ranchi

Ranchi is built on a plateau, and you notice it the moment you try to park a loaded truck on a slope in Bariatu or Morabadi. Some lanes there, and around Upper Bazar, are too narrow for a full-size vehicle, so we bring a smaller one to the door and shift goods into the big truck on the main road. Main Road, Kanke Road, Circular Road and Harmu Road clog up during school and office hours, which is why our crews like to start early.

Newer complexes on Kanke Road, Ratu Road and in Argora usually want a lift booking and fixed hours. In a freshly built society the lift may not be working yet, or the approach road may still be kachcha. We check all this on the survey before giving you a date.

Moving on a transfer order

Being the state capital, Ranchi sees a steady stream of government and public-sector transfers, and plenty of families in Doranda and the HEC township in Dhurwa move every few years. Transfer orders rarely give you much notice. Tell us your joining date and the move manager works backwards from it: survey, written quote, packing day, dispatch. You also get an itemised list of everything packed, which is handy if your department asks for one.

If you're leaving official quarters, fix the handover date with the estate office early, and take photos of the electricity and water meters on the last day. Those two small jobs save a lot of phone calls later.

What changes when it rains?

From June to September Ranchi gets heavy showers and sudden thunderstorms. We keep the loading slot flexible and wrap sofas, mattresses and electronics in waterproof layers over the normal 4-layer packing. Wooden furniture goes under Fabric Sheet, fragile things into Perfect Box cartons, and it all rides in the closed Trucking Cube. If a storm makes carrying things down wet stairs unsafe, we wait it out. November to February is cool and dry, and the easiest time to move if you have a choice.

One small thing helps a lot in the rains. Keep a couple of old bedsheets or towels by the door on moving day. With people walking in and out, floors get wet and slippery fast, and a dry floor is much safer for the crew carrying your fridge down the stairs.

Intercity moves from Ranchi

Jamshedpur is about 130 km away and Patna about 320 km, and both usually take 1–2 days. On the Patna run the truck takes the ghat section near Ramgarh and then goes on through Hazaribagh, which is slow going in heavy rain. Kolkata (about 400 km) and Bhubaneswar (about 450 km) take 2–3 days; see our Kolkata page for that end. Delhi is about 1200 km and takes 3–5 days, and Bangalore, at about 1790 km, takes 5–7 days. For the long ones, pack a suitcase that will see you through the first week, since you'll almost certainly get there before the truck does.

Cars leave Ranchi on a car carrier, and scooters or bikes are fixed on our Bike Stand. If your new home isn't ready when you leave, we can keep your things in storage until you have the keys.
