What to know before you move to Ranchi on a job transfer

Where do people on transfer usually live in Ranchi?

Ranchi isn't a huge city, but where you live changes your day a lot, mainly because a handful of main roads carry most of the traffic. On transfer jobs, we see families settle in a few clear groups of areas.

• Ashok Nagar and Harmu are settled, residential and fairly central, with a mix of independent houses and apartment blocks. Officers and bank staff who want quieter streets often end up here.
• Lalpur, Kanke Road and Morabadi put you close to colleges, coaching centres and the main shopping streets. Kanke Road in particular has a lot of newer apartments.
• Bariatu suits families who work at the hospitals and medical institutions on that side of the city.
• Doranda and Hinoo are on the airport side, while Dhurwa and Hatia work for people whose office is towards the south-west.

Our advice here is boring, but it works. Before signing anything, drive from the shortlisted house to the office and to the school at the time you'd really be travelling. A flat that looks close on the map can mean a slow crawl through Main Road or Circular Road every morning.

Many rentals in Ranchi are a floor in an independent house, with the owner living downstairs. That's often a good arrangement, but the owner sets the rules instead of a society. Ask when the water pump runs, whether there's space for your car inside the gate, and whether they mind a truck being loaded in the evening. Settle these before moving day, not while the crew is waiting outside.

Timing a mid-year school change

Transfers rarely line up with the school calendar. Most CBSE and ICSE schools start their session around April, so an order that arrives in July or November means a mid-session admission. Schools in Ranchi generally ask for a transfer certificate, the latest report card and a copy of the transfer order, but ask each school for its own list rather than assuming.

Some families handle it this way: one parent joins first and lives light for a few weeks, and the rest follow once the term ends or admission is confirmed. The goods move once, and the children don't change schools twice in a year. If the house is ready before the family is, we can keep the goods in storage and deliver on the date you choose.

Central government employees should ask about Kendriya Vidyalaya admission on transfer as soon as the order comes. Keep the uniforms, a few textbooks and every certificate in the suitcase that travels with you, not in a carton on the truck.

Plateau weather and your moving day

Ranchi sits on the Chota Nagpur plateau, so it's a little gentler than the plains of Bihar or Bengal. April and May still get properly hot, though, and afternoon heat makes stairs hard work for the crew, so summer moves start early.

Rain is the bigger issue. Pre-monsoon storms can roll in from May with strong wind and lightning, and from June to September heavy showers arrive with little warning. Storms often bring power cuts, and a lift that stops halfway with a fridge inside is nobody's idea of fun. We move the heaviest items while power is steady, and ask in advance whether the building has backup for the lift.

Lightning is taken seriously in Jharkhand, and rightly so. When thunder is close, our crew stops carrying things across open compounds and terraces until the storm passes. It costs half an hour at most.

Winter is the pleasant season, but December and January nights can be cold, especially for families arriving from Chennai or Mumbai. Pack a carton of quilts and warm clothes last and mark it clearly, so it's the first one off the truck at the new house.

Checklist for the weeks before you join

1. Share the transfer order date and joining date on the first call. The move manager plans backwards from there.
2. Book the free survey at your current home, and send photos or a video of the Ranchi house if you've found it.
3. Start the quarters handover and no-dues formalities at your present posting early.
4. Ask your children's current school for the transfer certificate well before the last day.
5. Find out whether the Ranchi house gets water from a borewell or a supply line, and whether an inverter is fitted.
6. Decide whether your car goes by car carrier or you drive it down, and keep the RC and insurance copies ready.
7. Pack a bag for the first week with documents, medicines, chargers and a few kitchen basics.

Routes into and out of Ranchi

Most transfers into Ranchi come from other eastern cities. From Patna it's about 320 km and usually a 1–2 day move, and the same goes for Jamshedpur at about 130 km. The long transfers need patience. Delhi is about 1200 km, and goods typically take 3–5 days, while Bangalore at about 1790 km takes 5–7. You'll get there well before the truck. We usually suggest staying in the guest house or a hotel for the first couple of nights instead of camping in an empty flat, and asking for delivery on a morning when the whole family is around to say where things go.

Settling in once the truck arrives

Unpacking is where transfers tend to go wrong, because the new job starts the next morning. Ask the crew to set up the beds, the kitchen and the children's study table on the first day, and leave showpieces and books for the weekend. Hold the itemised list while cartons come off the truck and tick each one as it goes in.

After that, get the basics sorted in your first week: register with a local doctor, find the nearest chemist that stays open late, and update your address with the bank and the gas agency.
