Banaras moves planned around narrow galis and festival crowds

What if a truck can't get into your gali?

That's the first thing we check in Banaras. Houses around Godowlia, Dashashwamedh, Chowk and Bengali Tola are often three or four turns deep into lanes where even an e-rickshaw struggles, and vehicles are kept out of parts of the old city at busy hours. So we don't try to force a truck in. The crew packs everything inside the house, and cartons go out by hand or on a small vehicle to the nearest point where the truck is allowed to stand.

Heavy almirahs and wooden takhts sometimes have to come down narrow staircases in parts. Mention them to the surveyor during the free visit, so the right number of people turn up and the extra work is already in the written quote.

Sigra, Mahmoorganj, Lanka, Shivpur, Pandeypur and the Sarnath side are far simpler. Roads are wider and apartments have lifts, though you'll still want to tell the caretaker a day ahead and keep a parking spot free outside.

Dates to avoid, and the Ganga in flood

Some weeks in Varanasi just aren't moving weeks. On Sawan Mondays huge crowds head towards Kashi Vishwanath and traffic is diverted all over the city. Mahashivratri and Dev Deepawali are much the same. If your house is anywhere near the ghats or the old city, pick another date and you'll save yourself hours of waiting.

In August and September, when the Ganga rises, low-lying colonies near Assi, Nagwa and Samne Ghat can get waterlogged, so we check the river before confirming dates there. The monsoon is sticky, and beds, mattresses and wooden furniture get waterproof wrapping before our Fabric Sheet goes on. December and January bring thick fog on the highways, which slows long trips, and we add a little buffer to the delivery date for it.

BHU, BLW and government transfers

A lot of Banaras moves are transfers. Railway families at Banaras Locomotive Works, staff at BHU and officers posted to government offices often have a joining date that won't budge. Your move manager works back from that date, and we prepare an itemised packing list, which helps if your office asks for one.

Students leaving hostels or rented rooms in Lanka usually have a small load, maybe some cartons, a cooler, books and a bike. That's a normal job for us. Routes out of Varanasi and how long they take

Prayagraj is about 130 km and Patna about 250 km, and both usually take 1–2 days door to door. Lucknow, about 300 km away, is also 1–2 days. Kolkata is about 670 km and takes 2–3 days. Delhi, about 790 km, takes 3–5 days, depending partly on truck entry hours at the Delhi end.
