Unit areas, Old Town and the newer side of the city

Bhubaneswar is one of the easier cities to move in, as long as you know which part you're in. The older planned areas, still called by their Unit numbers, along with Saheed Nagar, Nayapalli and Kharavela Nagar, are mostly independent houses and low-rise buildings with decent road access. The Old Town around Lingaraj Temple is different. Lanes there are narrow and full of devotees, so a smaller vehicle may have to shuttle goods to the main road.

Most new housing has come up in Patia, Chandrasekharpur, Raghunathpur and around Infocity, and these are largely apartment societies. Ask your society office about lift booking and truck parking a few days before, not on the morning of the move. Shifting between Bhubaneswar and Cuttack counts as a local move for us, but old Cuttack's lanes can be tight, so the surveyor looks at both ends before suggesting a truck size.

Should you move during cyclone season?

You can, but keep the date loose. The monsoon runs roughly from June to September, and the Odisha coast can see cyclones in the weeks before it and again in October and November. When IMD puts out a warning, we'd rather push your move by a few days than load a truck in strong wind. Fallen trees can keep roads blocked for a while after a storm, too.

Humidity is the quieter problem. Wooden furniture sealed while it's damp can swell or grow mould inside the wrapping, so our own trained crew packs things dry. Glass and electronics get 4-layer packing, and sofas, beds and dining tables go under our Fabric Sheet. For full loads leaving the state, the Trucking Cube, a lockable container you keep the keys to, keeps rain and dust off your things. April to June is hot and sticky, so loading starts early in the morning.

Offices, vehicles and long-distance routes

Offices in Infocity, Chandaka Industrial Estate or along Janpath are usually shifted over a weekend with desks and systems labelled. Our office relocation page explains how it's done. We also move equipment and stock out of units in places like Mancheswar Industrial Estate. Cars go on a car carrier, and bikes are strapped onto our Bike Stand so they stay upright.

Visakhapatnam is about 430 km and Kolkata about 440 km, and both usually take 2–3 days. Hyderabad, about 990 km, takes 3–5 days. Chennai (about 1,240 km) and Delhi (about 1,660 km) each take 5–7 days.
