Old bungalows, new flats and plenty of transfers

Dehradun moves tend to fall into two kinds. The older parts of town, Dalanwala, Karanpur and the lanes off Rajpur Road, have bungalows and independent houses where the access is fine but the approach road can be narrow and lined with parked cars. Newer housing on Sahastradhara Road, in Jakhan, Prem Nagar and around Clement Town, is mostly apartments with lifts and a society office that wants to know you're coming.

Many moves here are transfers. Officers at IMA, staff at FRI and ONGC, and teachers at the boarding schools often get short notice and a fixed joining date. Tell us that date when you call, and your move manager plans packing and dispatch backwards from it. Demand for trucks also goes up when school sessions start and end, so book early if your move falls then.

Can a truck get up to Mussoorie?

Not always a big one. The road to Mussoorie is steep with tight hairpins, and higher up in Landour or around Chakrata some houses are reached by a path, so the last stretch is on foot. For hill moves we send a smaller truck, tie every item down harder than usual and pack appliances for constant turning. Sometimes that means two trips instead of one, and the surveyor will tell you so at the free pre-move survey, not on the day.

Timing matters even more in the hills. From late June to September, landslides can shut a road for hours or occasionally days, so we keep a buffer and won't send a loaded truck up on a day with a heavy-rain warning. Winter snow sometimes closes the higher roads for a short while too.

What to pack separately for a Doon move

Our own trained crew does the packing. Glassware and electronics get 4-layer packing, furniture is wrapped in our Fabric Sheet, and fragile things go into our Perfect Box cartons. One thing people here forget is to put the quilts, woollens and room heater in their own labelled carton. If you arrive in December, that's the box you'll want open first.

Routes to the plains and how long they take

Chandigarh is about 170 km, and Delhi and Noida are each about 230 km away. Gurugram is about 260 km. All of them usually take 1–2 days, since truck entry hours in Delhi NCR decide the delivery more than the drive does. Lucknow is about 550 km and takes 2–3 days.

Rishikesh, Haridwar, Doiwala, Vikasnagar and Roorkee are short local runs. During the Kanwar Yatra in Sawan, though, the highway through Haridwar and western UP gets closed or diverted for long stretches, so plan around those weeks if you can. Moving to the NCR? Our Delhi page has details.
