Moving from Dehradun to Mussoorie or nearby hill towns usually needs a smaller truck than a plains move, tighter strapping for hairpin bends, and sometimes hand-carrying for the last stretch. Avoid the peak monsoon weeks when landslides close roads, watch for frost and occasional snow in winter, and keep a spare day so nothing is rushed on a narrow road.

Doon valley or the hills?
Plenty of people moving to Dehradun keep one eye on the hills. Some take a job in the city and a weekend place in Mussoorie or Landour. Others retire to a cottage near Dhanaulti or Kanatal, or take a teaching post at one of the schools up on the ridge. And a lot of families who've lived in Dehradun for years finally make the move uphill. We handle all of these, and the first thing we tell people is that a hill move is its own kind of job, even when the map makes it look short.
Within Dehradun, plains logic still applies. Houses in Dalanwala, Vasant Vihar or Jakhan are reached by an ordinary truck on ordinary roads. Once you're past Kuthal Gate on the Mussoorie road, or climbing beyond Maldevta, the road narrows, the bends tighten and the rules change.
Why do hill moves need a smaller truck?
A full-size truck struggles on the tighter hairpins, and there's rarely anywhere to park it on a hill road without holding up traffic. In Mussoorie itself, vehicles are restricted on parts of Mall Road at busy times, and many houses in Landour and Barlowganj sit up narrow roads or flights of steps that no truck will reach. So for most hill moves we send a smaller vehicle that can turn, climb and stop where it's needed.
The trade-off is space. A household that fits one big truck on the plains may need two smaller trips uphill, or a transfer where goods move from a large truck in Dehradun into a smaller one. For homes reached only on foot, our crew carries the last stretch, and that's built into the crew size and the written quote.
Packing for bends and climbs
On a hill road, everything in the truck gets pushed sideways at every bend, forward on every descent and backwards on every climb. Packing that holds fine on a highway can loosen within half an hour. What we do differently:
- Heavy pieces like almirahs, the fridge and the washing machine go in first, low down and against the front wall.
- Each row is strapped on its own, so a shifting top row can't drag the rest with it.
- Gaps get filled with soft bundles such as mattresses and bedding, so nothing has room to slide.
- Mirrors, glass tabletops and paintings travel upright, padded on both faces and tied to a fixed frame.
- The washing machine drum is locked, and loose shelves come out of fridges and cupboards.
- Fragile things go into our Perfect Box cartons, and every carton is packed full so nothing rattles.
Bikes come along on a lot of Doon moves, and on a hill road a bike that tips over can damage everything around it. Ours ride on the Bike Stand, which holds both tyres.
Monsoon landslides and winter roads
The monsoon is the season to respect. From around late June to September, and especially in July and August, heavy rain brings down debris and closes hill roads for hours, now and then for longer. The roads to Mussoorie, Dhanaulti and Chakrata all see closures in bad spells. We check weather alerts and road status before dispatch, and if the hills are forecast heavy rain, the loaded truck waits in Dehradun until it clears. If you must move in these months, keep your date loose by a day or two and have somewhere dry to stay if the goods are held up.
Winter is gentler but has its own risks. Shaded bends on higher roads can carry frost in the mornings, and Mussoorie and Dhanaulti get occasional snowfall that can shut roads for a day or two. We start winter hill moves a little later, once the sun has been on the road, and try to finish unloading before dusk, when the cold drops quickly. May and June are tricky for a different reason. Tourist traffic on the Mussoorie road can crawl on weekends, so weekday moves are far easier then.
Settling into Dehradun itself
Not every move up here ends in the hills. Plenty of families come from Delhi, Noida or Chandigarh to Dehradun itself, for work, schools or a quieter retirement, and the Doon valley has its own quirks. It rains heavily here in July and August, far more than most people from the plains expect, and seasonal rivers like the Rispana and Bindal fill up fast. Some low roads and colony lanes hold water after a big downpour, so ask the neighbours before fixing a monsoon date.
Houses are built for a cooler climate than Delhi's, too. Some older bungalows around Dalanwala and Rajpur Road have high ceilings, fireplaces and narrow verandas, which means big furniture has to pass through old doorways and over uneven steps. Newer flats on Sahastradhara Road or in Prem Nagar are simpler, with lifts and parking. Either way, mornings from December to February are properly cold, so an early start runs a bit slower than it would down in the plains.
If you're coming up from the NCR, your goods usually arrive in 1–2 days. Keep woollens in your own luggage for the first few nights, since the cartons may turn up a day after you do.
A checklist for moving uphill
- Send photos or a short video of the approach to the new house, including steps and any parking spot.
- Ask the landlord or neighbours where a small truck can stop without blocking the road.
- Pick a weekday, and steer clear of peak tourist weekends in summer and over Christmas and New Year.
- Keep one or two spare days around the move date during the monsoon.
- Keep a torch, an extension board and a room heater easy to reach, since power cuts are common in bad weather.
- Carry medicines, documents and chargers in your own car, because hill trips can run long.
- Check that water and power are connected at the new house before the truck arrives.
Coming the other way, down from the hills to the plains, is usually simpler, and routes like Delhi, about 230 km from Dehradun, or Chandigarh, about 170 km, take 1–2 days. Can a big truck go to Mussoorie?
