What goes in each carton

  • Small cartons for heavy things: books, files, tins and jars, tools. A small box of books is already as much as one person should lift.
  • Medium cartons for kitchenware, shoes, toys, small appliances and the contents of drawers.
  • Large cartons for light, bulky things: bedding, pillows, cushions, soft toys and folded curtains. Never fill a large carton with books.
  • Wardrobe cartons let clothes travel on their hangers, so formal wear and sarees arrive without fresh creases.
  • Bubble wrap and packing paper go around glass, crockery, frames and electronics before they go in a box; stretch film holds wrapping on furniture and keeps drawers and doors shut.

    How many boxes do I need to move a 2 BHK?

    Use the calculator above: it shows a range of small, medium and large cartons for a typical 2 BHK based on published packing guides. Homes with lots of books, kitchenware or clothes need more than the middle of the range.

    Should I buy packing material myself or let the movers bring it?

    If the movers are packing, let them bring it. They use double-wall cartons, the right wrap for each item and will be responsible for how it is packed. Buying your own makes sense only if you plan to pack everything yourself.

    Which things need bubble wrap?

    Glassware, crockery, showpieces, mirrors, framed art, TV screens and small electronics. Furniture is better protected with thick sheets or corrugated rolls, with bubble wrap only over glass tops and polished corners.

    How much packing tape does a move take?

    Roughly one roll for every ten to fifteen cartons when each box is taped properly across the top and bottom seams. The calculator gives a range for your home size; keep a spare roll for unpacking day re-taping.
