What should you sort out with your society first?

In Mumbai, the society office can hold up a move faster than traffic can. Every building has its own rules, so check these with your secretary or manager a few days before:

• NOC or permission letter to move out or in, often issued only once maintenance dues are cleared
• Service lift booking and the hours when shifting is allowed, as many buildings don't permit it late at night or on some holidays
• Truck parking, inside the compound or on the road outside
• Whether lift walls and lobby floors need to be covered

Then do the same for the new building. We go through both lists with you at the free pre-move survey, and our move manager can speak to the building security directly if that helps.

Old buildings, suburbs and Navi Mumbai

In South Mumbai, Girgaon, Byculla and older parts of Dadar, you'll often find buildings without a lift, staircases that turn tightly and no room for a truck at the gate. Goods get carried down and walked to a vehicle on the main road. The western suburbs from Bandra to Borivali, and eastern ones like Chembur, Powai, Ghatkopar and Mulund, are a mix of old buildings and new towers.

Heavy vehicles have entry-time restrictions in parts of the city, so the loading time and the route along the Western or Eastern Express Highway are fixed in advance. Our corporate office is at 01, 19/C, Gaothan, Sector 19, Kopar Khairane, which makes Kopar Khairane, Ghansoli, Airoli, Vashi and Nerul moves close to home for us. Thane moves on Ghodbunder Road are timed around its rush hours, and crossings between the island city and Navi Mumbai avoid the office-hour jam at the Vashi bridge.

Monsoon and sea air

From June to September the rain is heavy, and the humid, salty air works on wooden furniture, metal fittings and electronics all year. Everything gets 4-layer packing with a moisture-resistant outer wrap. Furniture is covered with the Fabric Sheet, and mattresses and sofas are sealed completely, since damp upholstery takes ages to dry here. If there's a heavy rain alert on loading day, we'd rather move the slot than let your cartons sit in a wet lobby.

Most flats are small, so we pack room by room and stack cartons in a way that leaves a clear path for the big pieces. It's worth giving away or selling bulky things you won't use in the new place before we come, since space is money in this city.

Intercity and international moves

Pune is about 150 km and takes 1–2 days. Ahmedabad (about 500 km) and Goa (about 540 km) take 2–3 days. Hyderabad is around 710 km and Bangalore around 990 km, both 3–5 days, and Delhi, roughly 1330 km away, takes 5–7 days.
