Packers and Movers from Mumbai to Ahmedabad

Six hours on the highway, two societies to plan

Quick answer

Mumbai to Ahmedabad is about 500 km by road, and a household move usually takes 2–3 days door to door, even though the drive itself is only around six hours. For a 2 BHK, typical market rates on this route sit in the ₹23,000–₹38,000 range before GST. The packing, the two societies and the truck you pick decide the timing more than the highway does.

The road north out of Mumbai

The fastest road route on OpenStreetMap leaves Mumbai heading north on NH48 and stays on it for roughly the first 240 km, crossing from Maharashtra into Gujarat along the way. It then picks up NE4, the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, for about 180 km, and covers the last 60 km or so on NE1, the older Vadodara-Ahmedabad expressway.

NE4 is still being finished in places, so depending on which sections are open that month, a truck may spend more of the trip on NH48 instead. The road passes close to Navsari at about 250 km and skirts Vadodara at around 380 km. It's one of the busiest freight corridors in the country, with container trucks on it round the clock, which is why a move here is less about the road and more about getting in and out of the two cities on time.

Why a six-hour drive still needs a few days

The actual driving is only about six hours, yet most moves on this route take 2–3 days from the first carton to the last. Here's roughly how that time splits.

  1. Packing and loading in Mumbai. A 2 BHK takes most of a day, and it has to fit inside the hours your society allows for shifting.
  2. Getting out of the city. Big goods vehicles face entry and exit restrictions in parts of Mumbai, so the truck often leaves in the evening or at night.
  3. The drive north. Around six hours, a little more with a rest stop or heavy rain.
  4. Unloading in Ahmedabad. This happens when the new building gives you a slot, which may be the next morning or the day after.

If you're driving down yourself, don't leave Mumbai until the crew has finished and you've signed the inventory. You'll still reach Ahmedabad well ahead of the truck, with time to collect the keys and tell the society office it's on its way.

Shared truck

A good fit for a 1 BHK or a part load. Mumbai to Gujarat trucks fill up fast, so the wait is short, but your goods sit among other drops and can arrive a day later.

Dedicated truck

Worth it for a 2 BHK and up. Load in Mumbai in the evening, unload in Ahmedabad once your slot comes up, and nobody else's cartons are in the truck with yours.

Should you share a truck or book one?

Mumbai to Ahmedabad is about as good as it gets for a shared truck. So many part loads move between Mumbai and Gujarat that space fills quickly, and the extra wait tends to be a day rather than a week. For a 1 BHK, a bachelor's flat or a few pieces of furniture, it's the sensible choice on cost. What you give up is control, because your cartons ride with other people's goods and may be shifted around when their loads come off.

For a 2 BHK or bigger, look hard at a dedicated truck. The price gap is narrower on a short run like this than on a cross-country move, and your goods are loaded once, driven straight up and unloaded once. If you'd like the whole load sealed in a Trucking Cube with the keys in your own pocket, mention it at the survey.

Paperwork, tolls and Gujarat's liquor rule

  • E-way bill. A truck carrying your own household goods doesn't usually need a GST e-way bill. What helps at a check is the signed packing list, a copy of your ID and the Ahmedabad address, all kept in the cabin.
  • Leave the liquor behind. Gujarat is a dry state, and even sealed bottles from the bar cabinet can't go in the truck. Finish them, give them to friends in Mumbai, or point them out to the crew so nothing gets packed by mistake.
  • FASTag tolls. NH48, NE4 and NE1 all have toll plazas, and the truck pays electronically through its FASTag.
  • Your car's papers. For car transport, hand over copies of the RC, insurance and PUC. If you're settling in Gujarat for good, the car will need re-registering there in time, unless you qualify for a BH series number.

Monsoon in Mumbai, dry heat in Ahmedabad

The rain usually reaches Mumbai in early June and stays until about September, and the coastal belt of south Gujarat around Navsari gets a heavy share of it too. Ahmedabad sees far less. That mismatch catches people out. It can be dry and scorching at the new flat while your cartons are being loaded in a downpour, so waterproof wrapping is needed for the Mumbai end whatever the Ahmedabad forecast says.

October to February is the easiest window at both ends. If you're loading in late August or September, check the Ganpati calendar, because immersion days close roads towards the sea and trucks barely move in parts of Mumbai. One more thing for summer moves. Solid wood that has spent years in Mumbai's damp air dries out fast in Ahmedabad, so keep teak and sheesham pieces out of direct sun and away from AC vents for the first few weeks.

Getting in and out of the two cities

The truck that does the Ahmedabad run is bigger than the tempos used for local shifts, and in older parts of Mumbai or tight compounds in Matunga and Dadar it may not get near the gate. A smaller vehicle then shuttles goods to it on the main road. Loading from Borivali, Mira Road or Thane is quicker, since the truck is already near the northbound highway, while a pickup in Navi Mumbai or South Mumbai adds a slow crawl before the truck is even out of the city. Society NOCs and lift bookings are covered on our Mumbai page.

Ahmedabad flats are usually roomier than a Mumbai flat with the same number of bedrooms, so measure before you sell the sofa-cum-bed that suited a tiny living room. The expressway brings trucks in on the city's eastern side, which means a delivery to Shela, South Bopal or Gota starts with a run across town. Moving into Gandhinagar or GIFT City? Ask the building what the gate needs before the truck arrives. Our Ahmedabad page covers the city's societies and old pols.

Mumbai to Ahmedabad move: frequently asked questions

Straight answers to the questions customers ask us most.

How much do packers and movers charge from Mumbai to Ahmedabad?

Typical market rates are about ₹14,000–₹24,000 for a 1 BHK, ₹23,000–₹38,000 for a 2 BHK and ₹36,000–₹55,000 for a 3 BHK, before GST. These ranges come from published price guides, not our rate card. A walk-up building, a shuttle vehicle in Mumbai or a car on a carrier adds to it, and we confirm the figure in writing after a free survey.

How many days does shifting from Mumbai to Ahmedabad take?

Plan for 2–3 days door to door. The drive is only about six hours, so the time goes on packing, getting the truck out of Mumbai when goods vehicles can move, and waiting for an unloading slot at the new building. A shared truck is more likely to use up the full 2–3 days.

Can I pack liquor with my household goods for Gujarat?

No. Gujarat has prohibition, so bottles shouldn't travel in the truck, sealed or not. It can hold up the whole load at a check and put the driver in a difficult spot. Finish them, give them away in Mumbai or leave them with family, and tell the packing crew if any are still in the cabinet.

Can the truck load in Mumbai and unload in Ahmedabad the next day?

It's possible with a dedicated truck, though not something to bank on. Loading has to finish within your Mumbai society's hours, the truck leaves when goods vehicles are allowed out, and unloading depends on the Ahmedabad building's slot. When both societies agree on timings in advance, it often works out. A shared truck can't plan around one family's dates.

Do you deliver to Gandhinagar and GIFT City from Mumbai?

Yes. The truck simply carries on past Ahmedabad to Gandhinagar or GIFT City, and it's handled as the same move. Gated campuses and government sector housing tend to have their own entry rules, so share them at the survey. The unloading time gets agreed with the building before the truck leaves Mumbai, so it isn't turned away at the gate.
