Three states on NH48 and NH65

The fastest road route from Mumbai to Hyderabad starts with about 90 km on NH48, up the ghat and out of the Mumbai region, then runs on NH65 for about 490 km, most of what's left. NH65 heads east across the Deccan plateau through Maharashtra, passing near Mohol about 360 km from Mumbai. It then cuts through a short stretch of Karnataka, where Humanabad sits around 530 km along, before entering Telangana for the final run into Hyderabad.

Once the ghat is behind you, the country is flat to gently rolling and the highway is mostly open, with long straight sections. That makes for a steady drive, but also long hours in dry heat for much of the year, which shapes how the load is packed.

Shared or dedicated for 710 km?

This is a middle-distance route, and the choice isn't obvious. A shared (part-load) truck is usually cheaper, and for a 1BHK or a partial load the saving is worth having. But a Hyderabad-bound shared truck may need a few days to fill in Mumbai, and a truck carrying several homes stops for each of them, which can push delivery past the usual estimate.

A dedicated truck is loaded once in Mumbai and driven through to Hyderabad. For a 2BHK or 3BHK, especially if you're starting a new job on a fixed date, it takes most of the guesswork out. It also means the only furniture rubbing against yours is your own.

What happens across the 3–5 days

Pure driving time is about 9 hours, but a truck full of household goods doesn't cover 710 km in one stint. Here's how the time usually splits.

• Loading day in Mumbai, with packing often started the day before for a 3BHK.
• On the road for most of the rest, with the ghat, rest stops and slower heavy-vehicle speeds.
• Arrival timed so the truck gets into Hyderabad and reaches your community inside its move-in hours.

Most people fly or take the train and reach Hyderabad a day ahead of the truck. That day is useful. You can collect keys, get the flat cleaned, book the service lift and check that the society has your move-in on its list.

Border checks, tolls and your vehicle

The truck crosses two state borders in fairly quick succession, Maharashtra into Karnataka and Karnataka into Telangana. Used household goods for personal use don't normally need a GST e-way bill, but the driver carries the packing list and a copy of your ID in case of a check. Tolls on NH48 and NH65 are paid through FASTag.

A car goes on a car carrier with copies of its RC, insurance and PUC. If you're staying in Telangana long term, you'll need an NOC from your Maharashtra RTO and then a Telangana registration, or a BH series number if your employer qualifies. Bikes and scooters follow the same rules, so don't forget them just because they're small.

Deccan heat and monsoon rain

The ghat near Mumbai is the wet part of this route. Between June and September it gets heavy rain, so cartons need a waterproof wrap for that first stretch even if Hyderabad is dry when you land. East of the ghats the plateau gets much less rain, though monsoon thunderstorms still roll across it.

The bigger issue is heat. March to May is very hot across this part of Maharashtra, Karnataka and Telangana, and a closed truck in the sun for a couple of days gets hotter still. Polished wood scuffs if it shifts, so furniture goes under Fabric Sheet covers and is tied in firmly. Aerosol cans, perfumes and houseplants shouldn't go in the truck at all in summer, and medicines belong in your own bag.

A compact Mumbai flat, a bigger Hyderabad home

Most Mumbai flats are compact, and homes in Hyderabad's gated communities tend to be bigger for similar rent. People moving this way often take less than they expected and buy larger furniture after they arrive. That can shrink the load enough for a shared truck, so decide what's going before the survey rather than after. If you're in Navi Mumbai, the truck is already on the right side of the city for the road east.

In Hyderabad, trucks from Mumbai come in from the west, which suits Gachibowli, Kondapur, Kokapet and the rest of the IT corridor. Uppal, LB Nagar or Secunderabad mean a longer drive across the city. Some newer communities have their loading bay in the basement, so ask the facility team about the height limit on the ramp. A full-size truck often can't go down, and the crew then carries goods from the surface parking.
