Five states and Delhi on the road north

The fastest road route from Mumbai to Delhi runs mostly on NE4, the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, for about 950 km, with roughly 220 km on NH48. Parts of the expressway are still being finished, so a driver may switch to older highways for a stretch. Unlike the routes that head inland from Mumbai, there's no long ghat climb at the start. The truck goes north into Gujarat, passes Bharuch about 330 km out, and is in Madhya Pradesh by the time it reaches Ratlam, around 660 km in.

After that the road enters Rajasthan, running past Sawai Madhopur at roughly 1,000 km, and then through Haryana for the last leg into Delhi. That's five state borders in one trip, which matters for paperwork, and several days inside a closed truck, which matters for packing.

Shared truck or dedicated truck to Delhi?

Both work on this route. The right one depends on how much you're moving and how soon you need it in Delhi. A shared (part-load) truck carries your goods with other customers' loads, and it's usually the cheaper option. The catch is time. The truck may wait in Mumbai until it has enough goods to leave, and it can stop to unload elsewhere before it gets to you, so a long run like this can stretch past the usual estimate.

A dedicated truck carries only your home and isn't opened until it reaches your new address. For a 3BHK, or a 2BHK with a lot of furniture, you'd fill most of a truck anyway, so the gap in price gets smaller. A single room or a student's things suit a shared truck better. If you go shared, ask for a Trucking Cube, a lockable container you keep the keys to, so your goods stay apart from everyone else's.

How the 5–7 days actually get used

Mapping apps put the pure driving time at about 15 hours. A loaded goods truck isn't a car, though. It runs slower, the driver needs proper rest on a trip this long, and it has to fit the heavy-vehicle entry hours at both ends. A realistic plan looks like this.

1. Packing and loading take a full day for most 2BHK and 3BHK homes in Mumbai.
2. The road takes up most of the remaining time, with rest stops across Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.
3. Arrival and unloading depend on when trucks may enter the city and when your building accepts move-ins, so delivery sometimes slips to the next morning.

Paperwork, tolls and an older car

Used household goods for your own use don't normally need a GST e-way bill, even across five borders. Checks do happen, though. The driver carries the packing list, and it's worth keeping your ID and a copy of the inventory on your phone. Tolls on the way are paid through FASTag, and your written quote shows how they're covered.

A car travels separately on a car carrier, with copies of the RC, insurance and PUC. If you're settling in Delhi, you'll need an NOC from the RTO where the car is registered and then Delhi registration, or a BH series number if your employer qualifies. Check one more thing before paying to ship an older car north. Delhi-NCR has age limits for diesel and petrol vehicles that Mumbai doesn't, and a car that's fine on Mumbai roads may not be allowed to run in Delhi at all.

Monsoon, desert heat and winter fog

This corridor gets almost every kind of Indian weather. June to September brings heavy rain on the Mumbai and south Gujarat stretch, so cartons get a waterproof outer layer. April, May and early June are very hot in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, and a closed container in that sun for days becomes an oven. Don't pack candles, wax polish, chocolates or lipsticks. Carry medicines with you.

December and January bring fog on the plains of Rajasthan and Haryana, mostly at night and early morning. Trucks slow down or wait for it to lift, so a winter delivery date gets a little slack. Delhi's winter pollution curbs can also hold up goods vehicles near the end of the trip. The weeks around Diwali are busy too, and trucks on this route book up early.

Over this distance, loose cartons shift. Heavy boxes go low and forward, fragile ones sit on top, and gaps are packed tight so nothing rubs for 1,330 km.

At the Mumbai end, your address changes the first few hours. The road north leaves through the western suburbs, so a flat in Borivali, Dahisar or Mira Road is already near the exit. From Navi Mumbai, Chembur or the island city, the loaded truck has to cross Mumbai first, and big trucks can only do that at certain hours on some roads. Sometimes a smaller vehicle brings the goods to the main truck at the edge of town.

At the Delhi end, the road comes in from the south through Haryana, so south Delhi addresses are reached before Rohini or Pitampura. A long-distance truck often waits outside the city for its entry window, which is why we ask your RWA for a morning unloading slot. Moving into a builder floor without a lift?
