The table below shows typical market ranges for local moves, compiled from published price guides. It isn't our rate card. The figures leave out GST, charged at 18% GST, and they assume a fairly short move with reasonable access. In Mumbai that last part decides a lot. A 2BHK in a Powai tower with a service lift and a 2BHK on the fourth floor of a Girgaon building with no lift can hold the same furniture and still end up at opposite ends of the range, because the second one needs far more hands on the stairs.

What changes the price in Mumbai

The floor and the lift

In older buildings across Girgaon, Byculla and Dadar, an upper-floor flat with no lift means every carton and cupboard goes down by hand, and most movers add a per-floor charge for it. New towers in Worli, Lower Parel and Powai do have lifts, but one service lift shared by dozens of floors can stretch loading well past the plan.

Society hours and deposits

Plenty of Mumbai societies allow shifting only in set hours and not on some holidays. A short window means a bigger crew to finish on time, and labour is a big part of a local bill. Some societies also collect a refundable deposit or a shifting charge of their own, which you pay to the society, outside any mover's quote.

Where the truck can stand

Lots of buildings in Bandra, Mahim and Matunga have no room for a truck inside the gate. If it waits on the main road, the crew walks every load down the lane, and in the tightest spots a small tempo ferries goods out to it. Both add labour, and the tempo is a second vehicle on the bill.

Crossing the city limits

Borivali to Mira Road or Chembur to Vashi still counts as a local move, but it isn't priced like Andheri to Jogeshwari. A larger truck may pay toll at the Mumbai entry plazas such as Dahisar, Mulund, Airoli and Vashi, and a slow run along the Western or Eastern Express Highway keeps the truck and crew out longer.

Monsoon months

From June to September, heavy spells flood the usual spots like Andheri subway, Milan Subway and Hindmata, and a truck held up by waterlogging keeps the crew waiting. Movers use more plastic and stretch film in these months. If a red alert pushes your date, ask whether the new slot costs the same before you agree to it.

Busy dates on the calendar

Most rentals change hands around the first of the month, so crews are booked tight in the last days of any month. During Ganesh Chaturthi, roads around Girgaon and Lalbaug close for processions, especially on immersion days. Gudi Padwa and Dussehra bring a rush of families moving into new homes. A mid-month weekday is usually the easiest date to book.

What usually costs extra

Entry toll. Charged at actual if the truck pays toll at a Mumbai entry plaza, which can happen on Navi Mumbai, Thane and Mira Road moves.
No-lift carrying. An upper-floor flat without a lift is usually charged per floor for the extra people on the stairs.
Shuttle tempo. When a lane in Bandra or Girgaon is too narrow for the truck, a small tempo carries goods out to it.
Split AC work. A technician takes each unit down and refits it at the new flat, and any gas top-up is billed on top.
Storage. If the next flat isn't ready, keeping a 2BHK load in storage typically costs ₹3,000–₹4,000 a month a month at market rates.
Transit insurance. Optional cover, usually priced at 2–3% of the declared value. Worth a thought for monsoon moves, when goods can sit in wet traffic.
GST. Added to the moving bill at 18% GST and shown as its own line on a proper tax invoice.

Why two 2BHK moves in Mumbai get very different quotes

Take two families with roughly the same furniture. One lives on the twelfth floor of a Powai society with a booked service lift and space for the truck inside the compound, and they're moving to Vikhroli. The other lives on the fourth floor of an old Girgaon building with no lift, a narrow lane outside and a society that wants the shifting done by evening. They're heading to Borivali.

The second family needs more people on the stairs, a small tempo to reach the main road, and a truck that spends a big part of the day on the road north. Their quote will sit near the top of the ₹8,000–₹15,000 market range, or above it, even though the furniture list is the same. That's why a phone quote based only on the BHK count doesn't mean much in this city.

Redevelopment moves come in two parts

Across Vile Parle, Santacruz, Dadar and Chembur, old buildings are being rebuilt, and families move out to a rented flat for a few years before coming back. Budget for both moves, not one. Many redevelopment agreements include a shifting allowance from the developer, so read yours before you decide how much to spend.

If the rented flat is smaller than your old home, putting the spare furniture into storage can work out cheaper than renting a bigger place. Pack the stored things in sealed cartons with a list on each one, and the move back will be quicker to plan and easier to price.

How much does it cost to shift a 1BHK within Mumbai?

Most local 1BHK moves in Mumbai fall around ₹4,500–₹9,500 at market rates, before GST at 18% GST. A compact flat with a lift and parking at the gate sits at the lower end. No lift, a long walk to the truck, or a move out to Navi Mumbai or Mira Road pushes it higher. A free survey gets you a written figure.

Is moving to Navi Mumbai or Thane priced as a local move?

Usually yes, though it costs more than a move inside one suburb. The truck spends longer on the road, a goods vehicle may pay toll at an entry point such as Vashi, Airoli or Mulund, and the crew's day runs longer. Your quote should show the toll as a separate line, charged at actual.

Does the society's shifting deposit come out of the mover's quote?

No. Any deposit or shifting charge your society collects is paid to the society directly, and a mover's quote won't include it. Ask both the old and new society in writing what they charge, when a refundable deposit comes back, and whether lift walls have to be covered on the day.

Is it cheaper to move house in Mumbai during the monsoon?

Not really. You may find dates easier to book, but movers use extra plastic wrap, and waterlogged roads can stretch the day. The bigger risk is a red-alert day that forces a reschedule. If you have to move between June and September, keep a backup date and ask whether switching to it changes the price.

Why do two movers quote so differently for the same Mumbai flat?
