Down NH44 and on to the east coast

The fastest road route on OpenStreetMap leans on NH44, the long north-south national highway, for about 740 km. Early on, the road crosses back and forth between Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh more than once, and Lalitpur comes up around 530 km from Delhi. It then runs through Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra into Telangana, passing Suryapet at about 1,580 km, before crossing Andhra Pradesh into Tamil Nadu. NH16, the east coast highway, accounts for about 310 km. NH547 and NH563 add roughly 190 km and 120 km.

What makes this route unusual is the change in air. Goods packed in dry north Indian weather finish the trip in coastal humidity, often after a week sealed in a truck. We wrap electronics, documents and leather separately, and it helps to drop a few silica gel sachets into cartons with cameras, books or paperwork. Over 2,110 km, heavy items also need proper strapping, since they take thousands of small jolts along the way.

Twenty-seven hours at the wheel, 6–9 days in practice

The driving time adds up to about 27 hours, but a loaded goods vehicle can't drive it in one go. Truck speeds are low, drivers need sleep over several nights, Delhi only lets big trucks move at certain hours, and a Chennai complex allows unloading in its own slots. A countdown that works for most families looks like this:

1. Three to four weeks ahead, get the survey done, fix the truck type and book the date.
2. Two weeks ahead, sort society permissions at both ends and your gas connection transfer.
3. Packing and loading day in Delhi, with the inventory signed before the truck leaves.
4. While the truck is on the road, settle into temporary stay in Chennai and get the flat cleaned.
5. Delivery day, when you check each numbered carton off the list.

Is a dedicated truck worth it over this distance?

For a full home, usually yes. A shared truck is the cheapest way to cover 2,110 km, but it waits to fill and stops for other customers on the way down, so your goods are handled more and delivery sits at the late end of 6–9 days. A week or more of hotel or serviced-apartment bills in Chennai can eat into what you saved.

Shared still makes sense for a student, a single person with a few cartons, or anyone who has somewhere to stay and no fixed date. Whichever you choose, fragile things deserve extra care on a trip this long. Seven states of paperwork, kept simple

Counting Delhi, the truck passes through seven states. Tolls on every one of them are paid by FASTag, and a proper quote folds them into freight. Personal household goods generally don't need a GST e-way bill, though the driver should still carry your signed inventory and ID copy for checks at borders.

A few things don't go in the truck at all. A filled LPG cylinder is a fire risk in a closed truck, so return yours to the gas distributor in Delhi and ask for the transfer paperwork to reconnect in Chennai. Petrol in a bike's tank should be almost empty. A car heading to Tamil Nadu for good needs an NOC from Delhi and re-registration, or a BH series number if you qualify, plus RC, insurance and PUC copies at handover.

Two monsoons and a foggy winter

This corridor has weather trouble at different ends in different months. From July to September the southwest monsoon soaks central India and the Deccan, so the middle of the drive gets slow and wet. From October to December, Chennai takes its heaviest rain, and delivery days can slip when streets flood. December and January then bring thick fog around Delhi, which slows the first night of driving.

April to June avoids the rain but brings harsh heat across Madhya Pradesh, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, and it's sticky on arrival in Chennai. That leaves February and March as the easiest window. Diwali weeks and mid-January around Pongal are also busy for trucks and crews, so book early if you're stuck with those dates.

Packing a Delhi home for a Chennai flat

Delhi households own things Chennai rarely needs. Heavy razais, blankets, room heaters and big woollen wardrobes take real truck space over 2,110 km. Keep one set for visits north, vacuum-pack the rest, and think about giving away the heaters. In Chennai, most apartment complexes ask for a move-in request to the association, a lift booking and the truck's details in advance. Independent houses in areas like Anna Nagar or Adyar are simpler, though gates and parked cars on narrow streets can mean a short carry.
