Should you drive or use a car carrier from Raipur?

For a short run, driving yourself is a fair choice. Nagpur is about 290 km along NH53, and plenty of people do it in a day with a stop for lunch. It gets harder to justify on longer routes. Hyderabad is around 760 km and Kolkata around 830 km, while Mumbai (about 1060 km) and Delhi (about 1130 km) usually mean a couple of long days behind the wheel, plus fuel, tolls, a hotel night and wear on the tyres.

Then there's the timing problem. If you're driving the car, you aren't at the old house supervising packing or at the new one receiving goods. A carrier lets the car and the household goods move on their own schedules while you take the train or fly. It also spares you a long highway drive with a family and a loaded boot, which on unfamiliar roads isn't everyone's idea of a good start to a new posting. Documents to keep ready

The paperwork is simple, but vehicles on the move can be checked on highways and at state borders, so copies should travel with the vehicle. Keep these ready before pickup:

• RC. A copy of the Registration Certificate, matching the number plate and chassis details
• Insurance. A copy of a valid policy, and not one that expires while the vehicle is on the road
• PUC certificate. A current pollution certificate
• ID proof. A copy of your Aadhaar, PAN card or passport
• Loan details. If the vehicle is still on a loan, check whether your lender needs to be told before it leaves the state
• Transfer or joining letter. Useful if you're moving for work

Keep the originals with you. If someone else is handing over the vehicle on your behalf, give them a signed authorisation letter and a copy of your ID.

Getting a bike ready for transport

A bike or scooter is lighter than a car but easier to damage, because mirrors, indicators and plastic panels stick out. Here's how to prepare it:

1. Run the tank low, leaving just enough fuel to reach a filling station at the other end.
2. Remove helmets, saddle bags, phone holders and anything else that can work loose.
3. Note the odometer reading and photograph the bike from both sides, front and back.
4. Hand over one key and keep the spare with you.

What happens at pickup and delivery?

The condition check is the step people rush, and it's the one that matters most later. At pickup, walk around the vehicle with our crew in daylight and mark every scratch, dent, scuff and chip on the condition report. Check the odometer, the fuel level, the spare wheel, the jack and tool kit, and accessories like floor mats or a music system. Take your own photos too, with the date on them. Both sides sign the report, and you keep a copy.

At delivery, repeat the check before you sign anything. Compare the vehicle with the report and your photos, start the engine, test the lights and look underneath for leaks. If something is wrong, note it on the delivery report while the crew is still there. A complaint raised a day later, after the car has been driven around town, is much harder to settle. Transit insurance is optional, but for a newer car going about 1130 km to Delhi, it's worth asking about.

Re-registering after you move states

Raipur vehicles carry Chhattisgarh registration, so a move to Hyderabad, Mumbai or Kolkata brings a new state's rules, and the same goes the other way for someone bringing an Odisha or Maharashtra vehicle into Raipur. In general terms:

• You can usually use the vehicle on its existing registration for up to 12 months after moving
• To keep it longer, you re-register with the RTO in the new state
• That needs a No Objection Certificate from the RTO where the vehicle was first registered
• The new state collects its own road tax, so ask the old state's transport department whether any refund applies
• If the vehicle is on a loan, the lender's NOC is needed as well

Rules and fees differ between states and do change, so check with the RTO or the state transport department's website before you begin. People in transferable jobs, such as defence and central government staff and employees of some larger private companies, may be eligible for a BH series registration, which avoids re-registering at every posting.

Sending the vehicle with your household move

If you're shifting house at the same time, book the vehicle into the same move so one move manager coordinates both. The car goes on a car carrier, and a bike can ride on its stand in the truck with your goods. Try to have the car picked up after packing is done, so the driveway is clear on loading day, and schedule its delivery for when you're already in the new city to receive it. If the vehicle is coming into Raipur, think about where the carrier will unload. A long carrier can't turn into the busy lanes around Gol Bazar or Sadar Bazar, so it usually stops on a wider road and the car is driven the last stretch. Colonies like Shankar Nagar, Telibandha or Avanti Vihar are easier. In April and May, park the car in shade once it arrives, since a closed car heats up fast in Raipur's summer sun, and clear sunglasses, sprays and loose plastic items off the dashboard before it's handed over.
