Choose the area by office first, with Wakad, Baner or Balewadi for Hinjewadi, Viman Nagar or Wagholi for Kharadi, and Hadapsar or Mundhwa for Magarpatta. Then get the society's tenant paperwork done, time the truck to arrive after the morning office rush, and if you're coming from Mumbai, about 150 km away, expect goods in 1–2 days.
- Pick the neighbourhood by commute at peak hours, not by distance on the map.
- Tenants usually need a registered leave and licence agreement and owner confirmation before the society allows a move-in.
- Aim for late-morning unloading, between the office rushes into and out of the IT parks.
- If you're renting short-term first, move the essentials and keep the rest in storage.
Start with the office, then pick the area
Most people relocating to Pune for work get the offer letter, a joining date and a vague sense that Pune is somewhere near Mumbai. The first real decision is where to live, and in Pune that depends almost entirely on which side of the city the office is on. A drive that looks short on the map can take a surprisingly long time at peak hours, especially on the roads feeding the IT parks.
As a rough guide:
- Hinjewadi. Wakad, Baner, Balewadi, Pimple Saudagar and Ravet are the usual picks, with Maan and the Hinjewadi phases themselves closer still.
- Kharadi. Viman Nagar, Kalyani Nagar, Wagholi and Kharadi itself keep the commute on the eastern side.
- Magarpatta. Hadapsar and Mundhwa are within easy reach.
- Baner or Aundh offices. Baner, Pashan, Aundh and Bavdhan suit anyone who'd rather not cross the city twice a day.
Many people rent for a few months before settling on a neighbourhood. If that's you, keep the first move light and send the rest into storage until you've decided where to stay for longer.
What do Pune societies expect when you move in?
New arrivals are usually tenants, and in Pune that brings a bit more paperwork than an owner shifting flats. Before the truck is allowed through the gate, a society will typically want:
- A copy of the registered leave and licence agreement
- The owner's NOC, or an email from the owner to the society office naming you as the tenant
- Tenant details for police verification, which the owner is expected to submit
- A move-in date, a time slot and the lift booking
- The vehicle number and crew count at the security cabin
Leave and licence agreements in Maharashtra need to be registered, and this can be done online, so get it sorted before moving day rather than on it. Ask the society manager whether anything else is needed. Newer complexes in Wakad and Kharadi can be particular about forms, and it's much easier to fill them in a week early than with a loaded truck outside.
Timing the truck around office traffic
Pune's IT corridors fill up twice a day. The morning rush into Hinjewadi and Kharadi and the evening rush out of them affect a moving truck more than a car, because trucks are slower to turn, park and get through society gates. So we usually plan like this:
- Load at the old home early, before school buses and office cabs crowd the gate.
- Drive across the city once the morning peak has eased.
- Unload in the late morning or early afternoon, when the service lift is free and shifting is allowed.
- Finish before the evening peak, when getting out of a society on the Hinjewadi side can take ages.
Heavy vehicles also face timing restrictions on some Pune roads, and your move manager checks the route against them. On a move from Mumbai, that means leaving at a time that gets the truck to Pune when both the roads and the society allow unloading.
Rain changes the maths too. A heavy shower in July can turn a twenty-minute stretch near Wakad or on Nagar Road into an hour, so on monsoon moves we leave more room between loading and the society's unloading slot, and cartons get a waterproof layer before they leave the flat.
Moving from Mumbai to Pune
This is the most common way into Pune for people changing jobs, and it's a short run. The road distance is about 150 km on the expressway, and goods usually arrive 1–2 days after loading. Distance is rarely the issue. Building rules are. A Mumbai society might only permit move-outs at certain hours, and your Pune society might not accept deliveries on a Sunday, so the loading and unloading slots have to fit together.
Monsoon weekends on the expressway can be slow, with rain and holiday traffic heading for Lonavala, so keep a spare day in the plan if you're moving between June and September. Household goods travel in the lockable Trucking Cube, and you keep the keys. For the move-out side, including society NOCs in Mumbai, see our Mumbai packers and movers page.
Coming from Bangalore, Hyderabad or Delhi
Not everyone arrives from Mumbai. IT moves between Pune, Bangalore and Hyderabad are common, and the transit times are longer. Goods from Hyderabad, about 560 km away, usually reach Pune 2–3 days after loading. From Bangalore, roughly 840 km, allow 3–5 days, and from Delhi, around 1330 km, 5–7 days.
Those gaps are the reason many people land in Pune before their goods do. If your company gives you a few nights in a hotel or serviced apartment, use them to finish the rental paperwork, register the agreement and get the society's move-in slot confirmed, so the truck can unload the day it arrives. If the rental takes longer, the goods can wait in storage instead of sitting on a truck. And pack a work bag that can carry you through the first week, because your desk setup may be in carton number forty.
Your bike, your car and the first week
Plenty of people bring a two-wheeler to Pune, and it makes sense, since offices and neighbourhoods are spread out. Bikes travel on our Bike Stand, and cars go separately on a car carrier. If your vehicle has a Maharashtra registration from Mumbai, there's no re-registration to worry about, though updating the address on the RC is a good idea. Coming from another state, you can generally use it on the old registration for up to 12 months before re-registering in Pune. Our bike transport page explains how the stand and the paperwork work.
For the first week, keep your laptop, work ID, documents and chargers with you, not in the truck. Joining formalities rarely wait for your cartons. Unpack the kitchen and one bedroom first and leave the rest for the weekend. The Pune packers and movers page covers local moves if you shift again once you know the city better.

Pune moving questions, answered
Which areas are best to live in for a job in Hinjewadi?
Wakad, Baner, Balewadi, Pimple Saudagar and Ravet are the usual choices, with Maan and the Hinjewadi phases themselves closest of all. Traffic into the IT park at peak hours matters more than kilometres on the map, so try the commute at office time before you sign a lease on a flat.
Do I need to register my rent agreement in Pune?
Yes, leave and licence agreements in Maharashtra are meant to be registered, and many societies ask for a copy before you move in. Registration can be done online. Sort it out with your owner before moving day, along with the tenant details needed for police verification, so the gate doesn't hold up the truck.
Can I load in Mumbai and unload in Pune on the same day?
Sometimes, for a small home with early loading and friendly society timings at both ends. Most moves are planned across 1–2 days, because the Mumbai building may only allow shifting at set hours and the Pune society may have its own unloading window. Your move manager matches the two slots and puts them in the written quote.
What time should the truck reach my new society in Kharadi or Hinjewadi?
Aim for late morning, after the office rush has eased and before the evening peak. The service lift is usually freer then, and the gate is less crowded with cabs and school buses. Check the society's permitted shifting hours first, because some complexes don't allow moves after dark or on Sundays.
Should I store some things while I look for a permanent flat in Pune?
It's often a sensible choice. If you're renting a smaller place for the first few months, move what you need and keep the rest in storage. Once you've chosen an area near your office, the stored goods are delivered to the new address, and you avoid paying to shift everything twice.
