Shifting a flat, a shop or a small workshop in Surat without losing work days

Picking the new area when home and work are both in Surat

In Surat, the first question is usually which side of the Tapi you want to be on. Families whose shop or unit is on Ring Road, in Varachha or out towards Udhna and Pandesara often find that the bridge crossing adds more time than the distance suggests. So the home tends to follow the work.

• Adajan, Pal and Rander, across the river from the old city, are established family areas with lots of housing societies, schools and daily markets.
• Vesu, Althan, Bhatar and Piplod, towards Dumas Road, have many of the city's newer high-rises, with clubhouses and stricter moving rules.
• Athwa Lines, Ghod Dod Road and City Light are central and well settled, handy for hospitals and older markets.
• Katargam, Varachha and Mota Varachha suit families who work in the diamond and textile units on that side.

When the home and the business are both moving, don't do them in the same week. Families who try usually end up with the shop half set up and the kitchen still in cartons. We normally suggest shifting the business first, over a holiday or weekend, and the home a week or two later, once the business has settled back into its routine.

Planning the home move in a Surat tower

The newer towers in Surat are strict about moving days, and the rules are often written down. Get a copy from the society office before anything else. Expect a service-lift slot, a fixed time window and a request that the truck stays outside the gate while goods come down on trolleys.

We ask for the lift to be padded, and we cover the lobby floor and the corners of corridors. Polished lobbies scratch easily, and a scraped floor starts an argument with the committee that you really don't need in your first week.

The rest is the usual checklist, with a few Surat twists:

• Book the society slot first, then the survey, then the truck date.
• If the new building has piped gas, apply to shift or start the connection early.
• Move cash, jewellery and family valuables yourself, before the crew arrives.
• Mark one carton of kitchen things and the children's school kit to open first.

Shifting textile stock without losing count

A textile trader's move is really an inventory job with a truck attached. Saree bundles from a shop on Ring Road, rolls of grey fabric, dress material in cartons: with all of it, the risk isn't breakage. It's miscounting, mixed lots and moisture.

This is the order we follow on most stock moves:

1. Your staff count and tag the stock by design, lot or party before we arrive. We pack what you've counted, so the count stays yours.
2. Each bundle or roll is wrapped in plastic first and then in a stronger outer layer, with the tag left visible.
3. Bundles are numbered in sequence, and a copy of the list goes with the truck.
4. Stock is loaded in reverse of how you want it on the new shelves, so the first things off are the first things you need.
5. Your staff tick off each numbered bundle as it comes in.

Timing matters too. Traders usually shift after market hours or on the weekly holiday, so buyers aren't turned away from a half-empty shop.

Surat's damp air is the other concern. Fabric that sits wrapped in a closed truck on a humid afternoon can pick up a musty smell, so we don't keep stock loaded longer than the move needs. For the same reason, silk and embroidered pieces are best kept away from the floor at the new shop until the racks are up.

Can a small workshop move over a weekend?

Often, yes, if it's planned properly. A handful of embroidery machines, sewing machines, cutting tables, a compressor or packing equipment can move from one shed to another in Udhna, Pandesara, Sachin or Katargam within a weekend. What decides it is how ready the new place is, not how fast we pack.

• Get your own technician or the machine supplier to disconnect and, where needed, dismantle the machines. They're also the right people to reset and test them afterwards.
• Confirm the power load and wiring at the new shed before moving day.
• Mark the floor where each machine goes, so it's placed straight into position.
• Keep dyes, chemicals and solvents out of our truck. They need separate handling under your own safety rules.

Paperwork to sort before business goods move

This is general guidance, and your accountant should confirm what applies to your business. When business goods move by road, an e-way bill may be needed even if the stock is only going from your old premises to your new one. The new shop, godown or unit also has to be added to your GST registration, as a principal or additional place of business, and local trade licences need the new address.

Update the address with your bank, your insurer and everyone who sends you goods. Traders often forget the transporter who delivers incoming parcels, and a week of deliveries turns up at the old shop.

If the new unit isn't ready on time, stock can go into storage for a short gap, packed and listed the same way it would be for the move.

Monsoon and festival timing in Surat

Late June to September is the hardest stretch for a business move here. Rolls of fabric and cartons of finished goods soak up water fast, and low roads near the khadis, the creeks that run through parts of the city, can flood after a heavy spell. If you have to shift then, keep a spare day, load under cover where you can, and don't stack stock on the floor of the new shop until you've checked it for seepage.

Diwali is the other big date. Many diamond and textile units close for an extended break, and a lot of workers travel home. That quiet period can be the right time to move a unit, as long as you book early and remember that electricians and fabricators may be away too.
