House Shifting Cost in Kolkata

Local moving costs, para to New Town

Quick answer

Moving house within Kolkata usually costs ₹4,500–₹8,000 for a 1BHK, ₹7,000–₹14,000 for a 2BHK and ₹11,000–₹22,000 for a 3BHK at market rates, before GST. The building has a big say. A lift in a New Town tower keeps costs down, while an old house with steep stairs and heavy wooden furniture needs more hands. These are typical market ranges drawn from published price guides. They aren't Skynet's rates, and GST at 18% GST is extra. Kolkata's homes vary a lot, so treat the figures as a starting point. A short move within New Town or Rajarhat with lifts at both ends should sit low in the range. A move out of an old house in north Kolkata, with a truck that can only come in during permitted hours and a crossing to Howrah at the end of it, belongs at the other end.

What changes the price in Kolkata

Old houses and heavy wooden furniture

Older homes in Shyambazar, Bowbazar and Bhowanipore often hold solid wooden almirahs, showcases and large palang beds that weigh far more than modern furniture. On a steep staircase with no lift, each piece needs several people and careful wrapping, and some have to be taken apart. Labour, not distance, is usually the biggest cost on these moves.

No-entry hours for goods vehicles

Kolkata keeps goods vehicles off many roads for much of the day. A big truck may have to wait for the permitted time, which can push loading or unloading late and add waiting or overtime charges. For a small home, a smaller vehicle that can move more freely is often the cheaper choice.

Salt Lake houses and New Town towers

Many Salt Lake homes are floors of independent houses reached by stairs, so a second-floor rental there is priced much like a walk-up. New Town and Rajarhat towers are the opposite, with service lifts but also booking slots and security passes. A tower move needs fewer people on stairs but may need more to finish inside the association's hours.

Crossing the river

A move between Howrah and Kolkata means crossing the Hooghly, and if the truck uses Vidyasagar Setu, that's a toll bridge. The bridge approaches clog up around office hours, and a truck held there keeps the crew waiting. That's why these moves are usually quoted higher than a move of similar size within one side of the river.

Storms, rain and damp

April and May bring kalbaishakhi storms that can arrive in the late afternoon with little warning, and the monsoon from June to September waterlogs spots like Thanthania and parts of Behala. Movers use more moisture-proof wrapping in these months, and a flooded road can stretch the day or force a reschedule.

Puja season and quieter months

From Durga Puja through Kali Puja and Diwali, traffic and road diversions slow everything down, and crews can be short as workers take leave. Some families avoid moving into a new home in months like Poush or Bhadra, so crews may be easier to book then. Check both before fixing a date.

What usually costs extra

  • Stair carrying. Houses with no lift and steep stairs usually carry an extra labour charge that rises with the floor.
  • Dismantling old furniture. Taking apart heavy wooden beds, showcases and almirahs so they clear narrow stairs and doorways.
  • Bridge toll. Vidyasagar Setu toll, added at actual when a Howrah move crosses the river that way.
  • Small shuttle vehicle. Used when a para lane is too tight for the truck, billed as an extra trip to the main road.
  • Storage. For a gap between flats, keeping a 2BHK load stored typically costs ₹3,000–₹4,000 a month per month at market rates.
  • Transit insurance. An optional add-on, usually 2–3% of the declared value. Ask how damp and water damage are treated before you sign.
  • GST. Charged at 18% GST on the moving bill and shown separately on the invoice.

A walk-up move versus a tower move

Picture two 2BHK homes with much the same furniture. The first is the second floor of an old house in Shobhabazar. The staircase is steep, the lane won't take a truck, and there's a teak almirah and a wooden bed that won't go round the landing in one piece. The crew is bigger, a small vehicle ferries goods to the main road, and a carpenter joins for part of the day.

The second is a New Town flat with a service lift and a truck bay. The crew is smaller, but the association allows loading only in a set window, so the team has to work fast. The first move usually sits in the upper part of the ₹7,000–₹14,000 market range and the second nearer the lower end, though the two families own about the same things.

Choosing between a small vehicle and a truck

For a 1BHK or a light 2BHK, a smaller vehicle making one or two trips can cost less than a big truck that has to wait for permitted hours. It can also get closer to your door in a narrow para. For a full 3BHK, one bigger truck usually works out better, because every extra trip means more loading and more handling. Where it's close, ask the surveyor to price both. Promoter projects mean two moves

In older neighbourhoods like Behala, Jadavpur and Tollygunge, many old houses are handed to a promoter who builds flats on the plot, and the family moves to a rented place while construction goes on. That's two moves a few years apart, and usually a big clear-out in between, because a new flat rarely has room for every almirah and showcase from the old house. Deciding what to sell before the first move saves paying to carry it twice. For pieces the family wants to keep, compare storage at about ₹3,000–₹4,000 a month a month for a 2BHK load with the extra rent on a bigger flat.

House shifting cost in Kolkata: frequently asked questions

Straight answers to the questions customers ask us most.

How much does a 3BHK house shift within Kolkata cost?

Typically ₹11,000–₹22,000 at market rates, with GST at 18% GST added. A 3BHK in a New Town or Rajarhat building with a lift, moving a short way, sits near the lower end. An old north Kolkata house with heavy wooden furniture and no truck access pushes it higher. The surveyor checks the stairs and the lane first, then we confirm the figure in writing.

Is the Vidyasagar Setu toll extra on a Howrah move?

Usually, yes. Tolls are normally charged at actual and shown as their own line rather than built into the base price. Whether it applies depends on the route the truck takes across the river, which your move manager fixes before the day. Ask for the toll line in the quote so there's no surprise on the bill.

Why do old north Kolkata houses cost more to move out of?

Because they take more people and more time. Steep staircases without lifts, lanes a truck can't enter, and solid wooden furniture that often has to be dismantled all add labour. A shuttle vehicle may be needed to reach the main road. The distance to your new home matters less than getting everything down and out.

Are packing materials charged separately in Kolkata quotes?

In many quotes, yes. Cartons, bubble wrap, stretch film, corrugated sheets and tape may be listed apart from labour and transport. In Kolkata's damp weather it's worth paying for sealed cartons and moisture-proof wrap for books, clothes and wooden furniture. Ask the mover to state the material in writing so you can compare quotes fairly.

Which months are easiest on the budget for a Kolkata move?

Late November to February is usually the most comfortable, with dry weather and the Puja rush over. April and May bring storms and heat, June to September brings waterlogging, and October's festivals slow the roads. Some families avoid Poush, from mid-December to mid-January, which can free up crews. Mid-month weekdays help at any time.
