The road between Delhi and Jaipur

It's about 270 km by road. The fastest road route runs mostly on NH48, for roughly 150 km, with shorter pieces on NH352W and NH248 of around 40 km each. You leave Delhi through Gurugram, cross the southern edge of Haryana and spend the rest of the drive in Rajasthan.

Rewari lies just off the route about 70 km out, and Narnaul is off to the west near the 140 km mark, which tells you how quickly the city gives way to open highway once Gurugram is behind you. The land is mostly flat, with low Aravalli ridges turning up more often as you near Jaipur. There are no ghat sections to worry about, and the highway is wide and divided, so the drive itself is kind to furniture. The slow parts are nearly always at the two ends. Getting a loaded truck out of Delhi and through Gurugram can take as long as a big chunk of the open road.

Why does such a short drive need a day or two?

On a clear road the driving takes only about three hours, and a loaded truck rarely gets a clear road out of NCR. Most of the time goes on work at the two buildings. A typical 2BHK move on this route goes like this.

1. Packing day. The crew packs, labels and seals everything, and the cartons stay inside the flat overnight.
2. Loading. Delhi keeps heavy trucks off most roads for a large part of the day, so the truck is loaded within the permitted hours, often early morning or evening.
3. The drive. Out through Gurugram and down NH48, with a short break for the driver.
4. Unloading. We'd rather unload in Jaipur in daylight, inside your society's allowed hours, than carry a wardrobe up an unlit staircase late at night.

So an evening load often turns into a next-morning delivery. A small load in a dedicated truck, going to a Jaipur building that allows evening move-ins, can sometimes be done in a day. It just isn't something to build a flight or a joining date around.

Shared truck or a truck of your own

Part-load trucks run often between NCR and Jaipur, so sharing is a fair choice for a 1BHK, a student's room or a few pieces of furniture. You pay only for the space you use. The catch is waiting. A shared truck may sit in Delhi for a day or two until it's full, then drop other customers' goods before yours.

For a full 2BHK or 3BHK, a dedicated truck usually makes more sense here. It's loaded once, closed, and opened at your new door. Because the distance is short, the price gap between the two is smaller than on a long haul, and you aren't paying rent on two homes while a shared truck fills up. Paperwork, tolls and an older Delhi car

Household goods for your own use don't normally need a GST e-way bill, but keep the packing list and a photo ID with you, and the driver carries a copy of the list. Tolls go through FASTag, so the truck doesn't queue with cash at every plaza. If a car is coming along, sort a few things out early.

• Hand over copies of the RC, insurance and PUC certificate when the car goes onto the carrier.
• Delhi-NCR has age cut-offs for diesel and petrol cars. If yours is close, ask the Delhi transport department about an NOC before you leave, because the Jaipur RTO will want one for re-registration.
• Staying in Rajasthan for good? Plan the re-registration, or check with your employer whether you qualify for a BH series number.

Fog, heat and wedding season on this corridor

In December and January thick fog settles over the plains around Delhi and southern Haryana, mostly in the early hours. A truck that leaves before dawn may crawl for the first stretch, so in those weeks we'd rather start later and arrive later. From April to June the problem is heat. A closed truck standing in Rajasthan sun gets very hot inside, so candles, cosmetics, medicines, chocolates, vinyl records and printed photos should travel with you in the car, not in a carton. Potted plants usually cope with a trip this short if they're loaded last and unloaded first.

July and August bring heavy downpours, and the Gurugram stretch of NH48 is known for waterlogging after a big one, which can hold a truck up for hours. Then there's the wedding season, roughly November to February, when both Delhi and Rajasthan get busy. Trucks, crews and highway traffic all feel it, so book early if your date falls then.

Leaving NCR and arriving in Jaipur

Where you load in NCR matters more than people expect. From Dwarka, Vasant Kunj or anywhere in Gurugram, the truck is close to NH48 almost as soon as the doors shut. From East Delhi, Noida or Ghaziabad it has to cross the city first, and with Delhi's heavy-vehicle rules that can mean a smaller vehicle shuttling goods to the big truck. Builder floors in South and West Delhi usually need beds and wardrobes taken apart for the stairs, which our Delhi page covers. Jaipur is gentler on trucks. Colonies like Pratap Nagar, Vaishali Nagar and Malviya Nagar have wider roads, and a truck can often park right at the gate of an independent house. Newer societies on Ajmer Road, Tonk Road and in Jagatpura want a move-in form and a lift booking, much like towers in NCR. Two things catch Delhi families out. Many Jaipur homes have polished marble or Kota stone floors that mark easily if a heavy almirah is dragged, and rooms tend to be bigger, so decide where the furniture goes before the truck arrives.
