Why summer moves in Jaipur need their own plan

Between late April and June, Jaipur's afternoons routinely go past 40°C, and the dry loo wind makes it feel worse than the thermometer says. A closed truck standing in the sun gets much hotter inside than the air around it. Combine that with carrying wardrobes down stairs, and you've got a day that can ruin belongings and wear people out unless it's planned properly.

Transfers, new leases and job changes don't always wait for October, though. Many families end up shifting in summer anyway because the school holidays are the least disruptive time for the children. So here's how we run summer moves across Jaipur, and what you can do from your side.

Start early and finish the heavy work before noon

On summer jobs our crew reaches you early and starts with the rooms that take longest, usually the kitchen and the store room. The goal is to get wardrobes, beds, the fridge and the washing machine loaded before the sun is overhead. Cartons and lighter things can follow once the big pieces are in.

For upper-floor flats in Mansarovar, Vaishali Nagar or Jagatpura, check your society's permitted shifting hours and grab the earliest lift slot on offer. Independent houses in Malviya Nagar or Raja Park are simpler, but sort out parking near the gate the evening before, so the truck isn't circling the colony while the heat builds.

Dust storms can blow up on May and June afternoons with little warning. If the sky turns brown, cartons already outside go straight into the truck or back indoors, and doors shut. It's normally a short pause, as long as nothing has been left open.

Protecting electronics and appliances from the heat

• Switch off and unplug the TV, computer and music system a few hours before packing, so they're cool when wrapped.
• Defrost the fridge the night before, wipe it completely dry and leave the door slightly open so it doesn't smell.
• Cushion screens and small gadgets well, and don't leave packed electronics standing in direct sun while the truck is positioned.
• Carry laptops, hard drives and cameras in your own car, not in the truck.
• At the new house, let the fridge stand upright for a few hours before you switch it on.

What melts, leaks or spoils in a hot truck?

Some everyday things simply don't survive a May afternoon inside a closed vehicle. Pull these out before packing starts.

• Medicines. Insulin, eye drops, some syrups and anything labelled to be stored below 25°C travel with you, ideally in an insulated bag.
• Candles and wax. Decorative candles and wax crafts soften and stick to whatever they're packed next to.
• Cosmetics. Lipsticks, creams and perfumes can melt, separate or leak.
• Aerosols and flammables. Deodorant cans, room fresheners, paint thinner and lighter fluid shouldn't go in the load at all.
• Food. Chocolates, ghee and pickles in plastic jars are better used up or carried in a cool box.
• Photos and records. Old albums and vinyl can warp, so keep them flat and out of the heat.

Plants suffer too. Water them early, keep them in the shade and move them last, in your own car if possible. And don't put the LPG cylinder in with household goods. Ask your gas distributor how to transfer or return the connection.

Keeping the family and the crew safe

Heat exhaustion is a genuine risk on a summer moving day, both for the people carrying furniture down the stairs and for a family standing around in a half-packed house with the fans already boxed. A little preparation goes a long way.

• Keep a big water can, glasses and ORS packets where everyone can reach them.
• Leave one fan or cooler running until the very end, and pack it last.
• Children, elderly relatives and pets are better off with a neighbour or relative during loading, away from the stairs and the truck.
• Take breaks in the shade, and never hurry anyone carrying something heavy.
• Know where the nearest clinic is, in both neighbourhoods.

Cooling down the new place before your goods land

A home that has stayed locked through a Jaipur summer can feel like an oven on day one. If you can visit a day or two early, open it up in the evening, get the AC units serviced and running for a while, and make sure the ceiling fans actually work. Have the overhead water tank cleaned and filled, and ask the neighbours when supply comes, since plenty of colonies only get water at certain hours.

Top-floor flats and houses with an open terrace heat up the most. Put curtains or blinds up in one bedroom first, so there's a cool room where children and older family members can rest while the rest of the house is being unpacked. If the house has an inverter, charge it fully, because power cuts can happen when demand peaks in summer.

What to keep with you on moving day

Pack a day bag for each person and keep it in your car. Put in documents, jewellery, cash, phone chargers, medicines, a change of clothes, towels, a torch, some snacks and plenty of drinking water. Add the keys to both houses and your copy of the inventory.

At the new place, open windows in the early morning or late evening to let trapped heat out, and unpack the kitchen and bedding first. If you're leaving Jaipur, Gurgaon at about 270 km and Delhi at about 290 km are usually 1–2 day moves, while Ahmedabad, about 650 km, takes 2–3 days, so book your own travel to arrive before the truck does.
