How to pack and plan a move in Vizag's salty air and cyclone season

What salt air does to your things

Anyone who has lived near Beach Road or in Lawsons Bay Colony for a few years has seen it happen. The steel almirah gets rust spots along the bottom, the AC's outdoor unit corrodes, the bicycle chain turns orange and the gate hinges start to squeak. Sea air carries salt, and in Visakhapatnam it teams up with humidity that stays high for much of the year.

A move can make this worse in two ways. Packing can trap damp air against metal and electronics for days, and scratches from handling expose bare metal, which starts rusting fast on the coast. So coastal packing isn't only about padding. It's about keeping things dry and keeping surfaces intact.

Some things suffer more quietly than the almirah. Inverter batteries leave corroded terminals, sewing machines seize up, gas stove burners clog and the springs in a folding cot go stiff. None of it shows on moving day. It shows a month later, when something that worked fine in the old flat suddenly doesn't. Most of it comes down to what happens in the two days before packing.

How to rust-proof metal before packing

• Wipe everything dry the day before. Steel almirahs, trunks, dining chairs with metal frames, gym equipment and the outside of the fridge.
• Oil what should be oiled. A thin coat of machine oil or anti-rust spray on tools, cycle chains, hinges and exercise machines protects them on the road. Wipe off the excess so it doesn't stain the cartons.
• Use plain paper against polished metal. Newspaper holds moisture, and its ink can leave marks.
• Add silica gel sachets to cartons with steel utensils, tools, cameras and watches.
• Touch up chipped paint on metal furniture soon after the move, before salt gets into the scratch.

Electronics and the humidity problem

Plastic wrap feels like the safest thing for a TV or a laptop, and in a cool, dry room it often is. But wrap warm electronics in plastic inside a humid Vizag flat, load them into a hot truck, and moisture can condense right inside the wrap. This works better:

1. Switch off and unplug appliances a few hours before packing so they cool down.
2. Pack TVs, monitors and speakers in their original boxes if you still have them, or in padded cartons with a breathable layer against the screen.
3. Put silica gel inside the carton, not just outside it.
4. Defrost the fridge a full day ahead and leave the door open to dry.
5. At the new house, let everything reach room temperature before switching on.

Laptops, cameras and hard drives are small enough to carry yourself, and that's the safest option for anything holding work or family photos. Goods going into storage between homes need the same care as the rest, so ask the move manager how cartons are kept dry while they wait.

When is cyclone season in Visakhapatnam?

On this coast the main cyclone season runs from October to December, with a smaller risk in April and May before the monsoon. People in the city still talk about Cyclone Hudhud in October 2014 and how long it took for trees, power lines and roads to recover. Most weeks in those months pass normally, but it pays to plan for the chance.

• Follow India Meteorological Department forecasts in the week before your date.
• If a depression or cyclone warning covers your moving day, postpone. Loading in strong wind and heavy rain puts the crew and your goods at risk.
• Agree a backup date with the move manager and with your landlord or society.
• Charge phones and power banks, and keep documents and valuables in a waterproof pouch with you.

If your dates are flexible, the weeks after Sankranti are comfortable for a move, dry and before the April heat builds.

Hill neighbourhoods and narrow approaches

Parts of Visakhapatnam climb into the hills of the Eastern Ghats. Waltair Uplands and Seethammadhara have steep internal roads, while newer areas like Yendada and Rushikonda have apartments reached by winding approaches. Around Simhachalam and Arilova, some streets are narrow and sloping as well.

On a slope, a fully loaded truck struggles to stop and start safely, and parking on a hill with heavy goods isn't a risk worth taking. In those cases the truck waits on flatter ground and a smaller vehicle shuttles goods up or down. Tell us at the survey if your building's approach is steep, the gate is narrow or there's a sharp turn just before it.

Rain makes it trickier. In the wet months, sloping roads, ramps and outdoor stairs get slippery, so we allow extra time and send extra hands.

Sea-facing flats along Beach Road and on the Rushikonda side bring a different problem: wind. Large glass doors, mirrors and glass tabletops are hard to carry through a balcony opening in a strong breeze, so they're wrapped and moved first, before the afternoon wind picks up. Keep balcony doors shut while the crew works, or loose sheets and cartons start flying.

Settling in after a transfer to Vizag

A lot of people arrive in Visakhapatnam on transfer, with central government, defence, public-sector, port, pharma and IT jobs. Many come from inland cities like Hyderabad, and the coastal climate surprises them in the first year. A few habits help once you've moved in:

• Run the AC or a dehumidifier on muggy days, especially in rooms with wooden furniture and books.
• Wash cars and bikes regularly, and hose off salt after a drive along the coast.
• Check window seals and balcony drains before the first big rain.

Leaving Vizag works the other way round. Get a technician to take down the AC and look at the copper pipes and outdoor unit for corrosion before they're reinstalled somewhere new.
